(Bear with me on the picture. I know it’s not the best but it’s the only picture I could find that goes along with this.)
I assume many people know that on the internet religion is not welcome most of the time. A lot of people bash religion because they think it’s “edgy” and “cool.”
It isn’t.
To put it in the nicest way possible, it makes you look like a jerk. People have their own religious beliefs. Just because you are a part of another religion or you don’t have any religion does not give you the right to bash another person’s beliefs. Also, that person who goes onto religious sites just to make fun of the people on said site? You get bonus points in the jerk category, because you know it’s a site for that specific religion. You could have ignored it, but you chose not to and probably made a bunch of immature comments. Good job… not.
Then again, it’s also not alright to try to push someone into your own religion. I used to be a Christian, now I’m Agnostic, I’ve had people try to push me back into being a Christian again. I get it, it’s annoying. Does that give you the right to harass and make fun of them? No. Just tell them politely you don’t want to participate in said religion. If they don’t back off, ignore them. Also, even in religious debates you should respect the person and their beliefs even if you think they are utterly ridiculous. When it comes down to it, it’s all just common courtesy.
I know someone is going to bring up people who hurt others while practicing their religion such as the Westboro Baptist Church. That is unacceptable, but it still does not give you the right to make fun of them or harass them back. It makes you just as bad as they are. In a situation with people like that I found that it is best to ignore them if possible, ask said people politely to go away, or if you have to get authorities in the matter if something like that is going on outside of the internet.
Again, this is all just common courtesy, which isn’t actually that common anymore.
